Buffalo Horn Carvings
These hand-carved figures from the domestic water buffalo horn are the product of a cottage industry in Thailand. Such carvings date from the glory of ancient Siam. Today, the water buffalo is the source of meat in Thailand, and these carvings are an environmentally sound byproduct. Since each horn is unique and natural, there will be variations in color and texture; each piece is an individual work of art. Sometimes the buffalo will have white or albino horns. These are highly prized and are only carved into certain special designs like eagles and peacocks.
