Breaking rough material for tumbling - It is wonderful to tumble rocks that you find yourself, but if you want, you can prepare the bigger rough rock into smaller pieces for tumbling. When breaking rock for use in your tumbler, remember to protect yourself from flying rock fragments. Wear goggles, gloves and a long sleeve shirt. To break a rock, place it on a hard surface like brick or old concrete that can be damaged. Wrap the rock in a heavy piece of material like canvas, wrapping the rock up entirely. Use a hammer to break the rock into smaller pieces, usually 1 1/2" to 2" in size to get the best results in your tumbler.

Very Important - Keep in mind to choose rocks of the same hardness to be tumbled together. Also, most rotating tumblers require 60 days from start to finish for one batch of rock. Patience is very important to get the very best polish possible.
